Direct-vent boilers
A direct-vent boiler takes its combustion air from outside through one pipe and discharges flue gases through another, so the appliance is sealed off from the room it heats. The arrangement retires the chimney, allows the boiler to sit almost anywhere a vent route can reach, and is the standard configuration for modern condensing gas boilers in BC.
What direct venting means
Direct venting uses two pipes: one brings outdoor combustion air to the burner, and the other carries flue gases outside. Because the air supply is dedicated, the appliance does not draw air from the room and does not depend on a chimney for draft. IBC's SL G3 manual states that its boilers are approved as Category IV vented appliances and use direct vent, described as sealed combustion, or indoor combustion air as an alternative. Navien's NCB-H manual makes the same point in its venting section, stating that all Navien boilers are Category IV appliances and are prepared at the factory to be direct vented, again described as sealed combustion, and recommending direct air vent installations whenever possible.
The Category IV designation matters because it describes how the vent behaves: positive pressure, with the appliance's fan pushing the gases out. Direct-vent condensing boilers therefore use plastic venting certified to ULC S636 rather than metal chimneys, and the two pipes can terminate together in a concentric terminal or separately through a wall or roof. Burnham's Revolution manual shows the range of approved arrangements, from separate horizontal or vertical terminations to combination terminals that join the vent and air intake at one penetration.
Why it matters in BC homes
The sealed air supply solves several problems at once. A house that is tight or depressurized by exhaust fans cannot starve a direct-vent boiler of combustion air, and the boiler cannot spill combustion products into the living space through a draft hood. Indoor air quality is separated from combustion, and the appliance can be located without regard to a chimney, which is what makes utility closets, kitchens and interior walls viable boiler locations.
Direct venting is also what allows an old chimney to be retired. When an atmospheric boiler is replaced by a direct-vent condensing unit, the masonry flue stops being part of the heating system and often becomes a source of drafts and moisture that the house is better off without. The trade-off is that the vent route now has to be planned: the installer must find a path from the boiler to an outside wall or roof that stays within the model's maximum vent length and keeps the terminal clear of windows, doors, intakes and snow.
Installation realities
A direct-vent installation is a venting job as much as a plumbing one. The vent system must be certified to ULC S636, the Canadian standard for Type BH gas venting that CSA B149.1 requires, as Technical Safety BC's plastic venting directive records. That directive exists because uncertified plastic venting failed in Canadian homes and created carbon-monoxide hazards, so the certified system is mandatory for new installations and appliance replacements. The installer also follows the manufacturer's vent length, elbow count, slope and support requirements, and terminates the pipes at approved clearances.
Condensate is the companion detail. A condensing direct-vent boiler produces a steady trickle of mildly acidic liquid that must drain by gravity, or be lifted by a pump where the drain sits above the boiler. The condensate path has to be planned with the vent route, because both are fixed once the boiler is hung. Gas supply, the sealed system's expansion and pressure, and the electrical connection complete the installation, none of it unusual but all of it part of why a direct-vent project is a system job rather than a swap.
Buying, service and permits
When comparing direct-vent boilers, ask where the terminal will be and whether the route fits the model's limits, how the condensate will drain, and what clearances the terminal keeps from the home's own windows and intakes as well as the neighbour's. Ask whether the proposed model can also be installed with indoor combustion air, because some locations make a two-pipe run impractical, and understand what that alternative means for the mechanical room's air supply.

Does a direct-vent boiler need a chimney?
