Single-stage (on/off) boilers
A single-stage boiler has one firing rate: it is either running at full input or off. The control cycles the burner against the water temperature or the thermostat, which is simple and reliable but produces wider temperature swings and more starts than a two-stage or modulating design. Many older homes and some current commercial boilers still heat this way.
What single-stage means
Single-stage, also called on/off or fixed-input, describes a boiler whose burner fires at one rate. When the control calls for heat the burner runs at full input; when the call is satisfied it shuts off. There is no low fire and no intermediate step. The category is documented in manufacturer literature in different ways: Weil-McLain's 88 Series 2 page lists On/Off as one of its firing modes, and Raypak's Delta Limited hydronic boiler page describes its smallest model as having a 1:1 turndown, which is the same thing expressed as a ratio.
The arrangement is the oldest and simplest way to control a boiler, and it remains common. Lochinvar's Power-Fin manual documents separate manifold gas pressures for single-stage and modulating models and states that the units equipped with one of its temperature controls operate with a single stage ON/OFF burner operation. On the residential side, atmospheric boilers such as Weil-McLain's CGa are fixed-rate appliances rated at 84% AFUE, and many of the cast-iron boilers still heating Greater Vancouver homes work exactly this way.
How a single-stage boiler behaves
Because the burner has only one rate, the boiler meets part-load conditions by cycling: it runs until the water reaches the setpoint, waits while the water cools to the differential, then runs again. The result is a sawtooth water temperature and a series of burner starts rather than a steady flame. In mild weather, when the load is a fraction of the boiler's output, the burner runs for short bursts and the cycling is most pronounced, which is why an oversized single-stage boiler is a poor match for coastal BC's long shoulder seasons.
The behaviour is not a defect; it is how the appliance was designed to work, and the trade-off buys simplicity. A single-stage boiler has fewer control variables, fewer things to set up, and a long service history. Its rated efficiency reflects its design: the CGa's 84% AFUE is typical of a non-condensing fixed-rate boiler, and commercial single-stage cast-iron units such as the 88 Series 2 are rated up to 85.6% thermal efficiency. What a single-stage boiler cannot do is run steadily at low output, so its real-world performance depends heavily on correct sizing and on the system's water volume, which acts as a buffer between burner cycles.
Where single-stage boilers fit
Single-stage boilers remain sensible where loads are steady and large, where simplicity is valued, and where the system includes enough water volume or storage to absorb the cycling. Commercial plants often stage several single-stage boilers under one controller, which achieves part-load matching at the plant level rather than inside one appliance: Raypak's Delta Limited line supports cascade arrangements of up to eight units, and a staged plant with an on/off lead boiler is a long-established pattern.
In homes, single-stage boilers are mostly legacy equipment. When one reaches the end of its life, the replacement conversation usually turns to a condensing modulating boiler, because the venting, controls and water temperatures around the old unit rarely suit a modern appliance without changes. A single-stage commercial boiler that is still in good condition can be a candidate for repair, and the decision should weigh the unit's condition, the plant's staging arrangement and parts availability.
Service, repair and replacement
Servicing a single-stage boiler concentrates on the parts that cycle: the gas valve, the ignition system, the aquastat or control, the burner, and the venting. The technician verifies combustion readings and the control's differential, because a differential set too tight shortens cycles and one set too wide produces noticeable temperature swings.
