Comparison

Buderus SSB800 Gen 1 vs SSB800 Gen 2

Verdict in brief

The SSB800 Gen 1 and Gen 2 print identical ratings - 79,800 to 798,000 BTU/hr, 97.6% combustion efficiency, 96.8% thermal efficiency, 772,000 BTU/hr gross output - and the same 743 lb cabinet. The generation change is in materials and components: Gen 1 uses dual 316L stainless steel heat exchangers, Gen 2 dual 441 stainless steel, plus a Honeywell Rambler gas valve, Grundfos 43-110F pump and revised condensate collector.

What actually separates them

The two engineering submittal sheets print the same General, Performance and Operational Data for the SSB800: 54 sq ft of heat-exchanger surface, 2" NPT gas, 3" water, 6" vent/air, 13.0 gal water, 743 lb dry / 836 lb shipping, 80 psi MAWP and 15.1 FLA.

The documented differences are the heat-exchanger material (316L on Gen 1, 441 on Gen 2) and the component set Bosch describes on the Gen 2 product page: dual 441 heat exchangers for higher corrosion resistance, a new Honeywell Rambler gas valve, a Grundfos 43-110F 115/230 V pump and an improved condensate collector with integrated clapet valve. Gen 1 uses a multi-speed circulator pump per module.

Both generations are current catalog products - Bosch's Canadian condensing category lists 'SSB Gen 1' and 'SSB Gen 2' side by side, with Gen 2 marked NEW - and both carry a non-prorated 10-year heat-exchanger warranty. When ordering parts or service, identify the generation from the rating plate and use the matching manual.

Frequently asked questions

Do Gen 1 and Gen 2 SSB800 perform the same?

The submittal sheets print identical ratings: 79,800-798,000 BTU/hr input, 97.6% combustion efficiency, 96.8% thermal efficiency, 772,000 BTU/hr gross output and 671,300 BTU/hr net rating.

How do I tell which generation I have?

The rating plate, the installation manual revision (10.2020 for Gen 1, 01.2024 for Gen 2) and the heat-exchanger material: 316L indicates Gen 1, 441 indicates Gen 2. Gen 2 also carries the Honeywell Rambler gas valve and Grundfos 43-110F pump.

Are both generations still available?

Yes. Bosch's Canadian condensing category lists both SSB Gen 1 and SSB Gen 2 as current products, with Gen 2 marked NEW.
