What actually separates them

Both models are wall-mounted medium-mass boilers of HTP's UFT (Universal Fire Tube) line, sharing the 90 lb wall cabinet at 17.5 x 34 x 15.4 in, the same 1-1/4" NPT CH connections, the same 2"-to-50 ft / 3"-to-100 ft venting and the same 10:1 turndown claim of the family. Each also has a floor-standing sibling (UFT-80F / UFT-100F) with identical ratings at 120 lb.

The UFT-80W fires 8,000 to 80,000 BTU/hr with a 76 MBH heating capacity at 95.4% DOE AFUE; the UFT-100W steps the ceiling to 100,000 BTU/hr and the heating capacity to 95 MBH, with the printed DOE AFUE at 95.1%. Because minimum fires are nearly equal, in mild weather both track low load the same way — the extra size only buys design-day headroom.

Venting, gas pressure (NG 3.5–14" w.c., LP 8–13" w.c.), water pressure (12–30 psi) and the out-of-the-box 10-year residential warranty are identical, so the heat-loss calculation, not the appliance, decides between them.

Are the UFT-80W and UFT-100W the same physical boiler?

Effectively yes: the same 90 lb wall cabinet and dimensions, the same minimum-fire behaviour and the same connections. The difference is the firing ceiling — 80,000 against 100,000 BTU/hr.

Which UFT has the higher AFUE?

The UFT-80W prints 95.4% DOE AFUE against 95.1% for the UFT-100W. The difference is small enough that matching the boiler to the calculated heat loss matters more.

When does the UFT-100W make sense over the UFT-80W?

When the heat-loss calculation plus any indirect-tank recovery load approaches the 80's 76 MBH heating capacity on a design day; otherwise the smaller unit condenses the same.
