What actually separates them

Both boilers are indoor floor-standing commercial fire-tube units in the same class: 1,210 lb on the product page (1,500 lb with water per the I&O manual), a 1 1/4 in NPT female gas connection, 3 in grooved water connections on inlet and outlet, and 8 in air inlet and flue runs to 150 ft.

NTI lists the FTG1200 at 120 to 1200 MBH input with 96.1% thermal efficiency — the top rating on the FTG table — a 1,153 MBH heating capacity and a 1,003 MBH Net AHRI rating. The FTG1400 fires 140 to 1400 MBH at 96% with a 1,344 MBH heating capacity and a 1,169 MBH Net AHRI rating, so the step adds about 190 MBH of output for one tenth of an efficiency point and a minimum fire that rises from 120 to 140 MBH.

Both are heating-only plant boilers sized from a demand calculation, and the FTG I&O manual requires a 10% Canada altitude derate between 2,000 and 4,500 ft for the family. The 1400 earns its place when plant demand exceeds the 1200's ceiling; loads that fit under 1,200 MBH keep the slightly higher-rated 1200 with its lower minimum fire.
