Balancing valve
A balancing valve is an adjustable valve that sets the flow through each part of a hydronic system so every zone gets the heat it was designed for. This page explains what balancing valves do, how they get out of adjustment, and what a technician checks.
What it does in a hydronic system
Water, like electricity, takes the path of least resistance. In a hydronic system with several circuits, the shortest or easiest loop will happily take more than its share of flow unless something sets the limits. A balancing valve does that: it is an adjustable restriction installed in a circuit so the designer's flow rate is actually delivered when the system is running. The result is even heating and a system that behaves the way it was designed.
Balancing valves are also part of boiler protection. Weil-McLain's CGi manual states that boilers used in radiant panel or other low water temperature applications should be installed with balancing valves and bypass piping equal to the supply and return size, to avoid excessive flue gas condensation from low operating temperatures. Laars' Mini-Therm manual is even more detailed: it calls for a full-size bypass with balancing valves in multi-zone systems without primary/secondary piping, in systems where return water can be below 120 °F, and wherever system piping might reduce flow through the heat exchanger, with the return balancing valve adjusted to deliver 120 °F water to the boiler. It also states plainly that ball valves should not be used as balancing valves — they are for shutoff only.
At startup, balancing is part of commissioning. Weil-McLain's EG manual's startup checklist includes adjusting balancing valves and controls to requirements, and most commercial-grade systems record the settings so future service can restore them.
How it fails
Balancing valves are set once and forgotten, which is both their strength and their weakness. A valve that is never touched can seize, and one that is fiddled with loses its setting. Debris on the seat or a worn stem changes flow quietly. And when a system is modified — a zone added, a pump replaced, a valve swapped — the old balance is no longer correct even though nothing has visibly failed.
The symptoms are comfort symptoms: rooms that overheat while others stay cool, a zone that never quite warms up, noisy piping or a pump that sounds strained. Homeowners sometimes try to fix this by turning valves at random, which usually makes the balance worse and can starve the boiler of flow if the wrong valve is closed.
Safe things to check
Note which rooms are too warm and which are too cool, and when — some balance problems only appear when several zones run together. Check that radiator or zone valves you control are fully open. If a valve has a visible position indicator or memory stop, do not move it.
Do not open or close balancing valves to chase a comfort complaint, and do not use them as shutoffs. If the system has recently been modified, mention that when you call, because re-balancing is part of finishing that work properly.
What a licensed technician will check
A technician measures before adjusting. They take temperatures across circuits and at the boiler, check flow where the system allows it, and compare what they find against the system's design or the boiler's requirements. Balancing valves are then adjusted deliberately, one circuit at a time, with the system running under realistic conditions — not guessed at.
Where a valve is seized or damaged, it is repaired or replaced and the circuit is re-balanced. The technician also checks that the bypass and boiler-protection valves are set to keep return temperature where the boiler manual wants it. Frequently asked questions
Why can't I use a ball valve to balance my zones?
Laars' manual states plainly that ball valves should not be used as balancing valves — they are for shutoff only. A proper balancing valve is designed to be set to a repeatable position and hold it.
My system was fine until a new zone was added. What changed?
Adding or changing a zone alters the flow balance of the whole system. The existing valves usually need to be re-adjusted after the modification, which is why balancing belongs at the end of that work.
Is balancing the same as bleeding radiators?
No. Bleeding removes air; balancing sets flow. Air problems and balance problems can produce similar cold-room symptoms, so a technician checks both rather than guessing.
