Burner assembly

The burner assembly is where gas and air meet and burn inside a boiler, and its condition decides whether combustion is clean or makes carbon monoxide. This page explains what the burner does, how burners and their gaskets degrade, and what a licensed technician checks during service.

Safety first

If you smell gas, leave the building and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or 911 from outside. Do not reset the boiler or investigate the smell. If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, FortisBC and Technical Safety BC give the same instruction: get everyone out, then call 911 from outside and stay out until the building has been cleared.

The burner is the heart of the gas side of the appliance. In British Columbia, opening the combustion chamber, cleaning a burner, adjusting gas input or replacing burner gaskets is licensed gas work under Technical Safety BC, and the contractor handles the permit.

Never attempt to clean, adjust or light a burner by hand. Modern boilers have no pilot to light, and a burner that has been disturbed by an untrained hand can leak combustion gas into the room or produce carbon monoxide without any obvious symptom.

What it does in a gas boiler

The burner assembly takes the gas delivered by the gas valve, mixes it with the right amount of air, and distributes it so the flame burns evenly across the combustion chamber. In a modern condensing boiler it is usually a premix burner: gas and air are blended before the burner surface, and the fan pushes the mixture through a metal or ceramic mesh where it burns. Navien's NCB-H manual labels this part simply the premix burner and lists a burner high-limit fuse among its safety appliances.

On older atmospheric boilers the burner is a set of steel tubes or ribbons with a pilot flame nearby; on commercial equipment it may be a larger cast or fabricated assembly. The burner's job is the same in every case: hold a stable flame at the correct firing rate and hand the heat to the heat exchanger rather than to the room.

Because the burner is the combustion boundary, its condition is measured, not guessed. NTI's Trinity Tft manual states that burner set-up must be performed by a licensed gas technician and that combustion calibration is mandatory at installation and at every annual service, using a calibrated analyser capable of measuring CO2 and CO.

How it fails

Burners rarely break suddenly; they contaminate. Dust, lint, condensate minerals and debris block the ports or mesh, so the flame shifts, burns unevenly or lifts off. Soot on the burner is a warning sign of incomplete combustion, and the same conditions that soot a burner can raise carbon-monoxide levels in the flue gas.

Gaskets and seals around the burner and combustion chamber degrade with heat and time. A leaking burner lid, fan or igniter gasket lets combustion gas bypass the heat exchanger, which can scorch nearby parts and, on modern controls, trigger a rollout or flame-signal fault. IBC's commercial troubleshooting notes tie a dirty burner or heat exchanger to temperature-rise problems and tell the technician to check CO2 and pressure drop.

Ignition and flame-proving faults often point at the burner area even when the burner itself is sound. Navien's NCB-H error list separates ignition failure, false flame and flame loss into distinct codes, and each has a different cause: gas supply, grounding, air supply or a flame rod that needs cleaning.

Safe things to check

The homeowner's job is observation and reporting. Write down any alert text or code, note whether the boiler rumbles, pops or smells odd while running, and check the vent terminals outside for snow, nests or debris. A yellow, lazy flame visible through a sight glass is not normal on a modern boiler; a steady blue flame is.

If a CO alarm sounds, leave first and call 911 from outside. If you smell gas, leave and call FortisBC. Do not open the boiler, vacuum the burner, brush the ports or attempt any adjustment on the gas train yourself.

Annual servicing is the practical protection: FortisBC recommends regular appliance maintenance by a licensed contractor, and it is the visit where the burner, gaskets and combustion readings are actually checked rather than assumed.

What a licensed technician will check

A technician inspects the burner during annual service: removing it where the manual requires, checking the ports or mesh for blockage and damage, examining the combustion-chamber insulation and gaskets, and cleaning or replacing what the manufacturer specifies. NTI's manual has the technician set combustion at maximum and minimum modulation with the gas valve's throttle and offset screws, which may only be adjusted by a qualified gas technician with an analyser.

The same visit includes a carbon-monoxide check in the flue gas and a comparison of readings against the manual's targets. NTI's instructions are blunt that the unit must never be left operating while producing CO above 175 ppm, and that failing to calibrate combustion properly can damage the burner or produce dangerous CO.

Where a burner is cracked, warped or sooted beyond cleaning, it is replaced with the correct part for the model and fuel, and the repair is finished with combustion verification and a leak test.
