Condensate pump
A condensate pump is the small collection pump that lifts the acidic water a condensing boiler produces up to a drain when gravity drainage is not possible. When the pump sticks, clogs or trips its overflow switch, the boiler can lock out or water can end up on the floor. This page explains what the pump does, how it fails, and what a licensed technician checks.
What it does in a hydronic system
A condensing boiler makes liquid as it runs, and that condensate has to leave continuously. When the boiler sits below the drain it needs to reach — common in basements and retrofits — gravity cannot do the job, so a condensate pump collects the water in a small reservoir and pumps it up and away on a schedule. Navien's NCB-H manual describes the arrangement as one of the standard disposal options: from the boiler into a condensate pump, and then into a laundry tub, and it notes a pump can be used when there is a long distance between the boiler and the tub or when the bottom of the boiler is lower than the top of the tub.
The pump has to be sized and selected for the appliance. Navien's manual says that if a condensate pump is used, it must allow for up to 2 gallons per hour of drainage for each boiler in the system. Viessmann's Vitodens 100-W instructions are explicit about when a pump is mandatory: if the condensate outlet of the boiler is lower than the drain, a condensate pump must be installed, and the pump should be approved for condensing boiler applications and fitted with an overflow switch to avoid condensate spillage. The drain connection must terminate into an open or vented drain as close to the boiler as possible to prevent siphoning.
HTP's Versa-Flame manual repeats the same requirements and adds a detail homeowners should know: power to the optional condensate pump is continuous, so when the appliance is powered off the pump remains on, and it should be turned off separately when the appliance is shut down for service.
How it fails
Condensate pumps fail from what they pump. The water is mildly acidic and carries sediment washed out of the flue and heat exchanger, so the reservoir silts up and the float or diaphragm switch that starts the pump sticks. A pump that runs constantly, runs dry, or never runs at all is usually telling you the reservoir or the float has fouled.
The discharge line is the other half of the system. If it kinks, freezes or is piped uphill, the pump cannot empty itself; the reservoir fills, the overflow switch trips, and the boiler shuts down to protect the building. HTP's manual warns that if the condensate line is allowed to freeze or is obstructed, condensate can exit from the appliance tee and cause water damage. Navien's installation notes carry the same warning about freezing and obstruction.
The overflow switch itself can fail, either by tripping when it should not or by failing to trip when the reservoir is full. Either way the consequences show up at the boiler — a lockout with water on the floor, or a pump that quietly floods its reservoir.
Safe things to check
Listen and look. A working pump cycles on and off with a soft hum and keeps its reservoir mostly empty; a pump that never runs, runs nonstop, or leaves water on the floor is a service item. Check that the discharge tube is not kinked, pinched, sagging or running through a spot that freezes, and keep the area around the pump and boiler dry and clear.
Do not pour water, cleaners or drain chemicals into the pump reservoir, and do not bypass or tape up an overflow switch to stop a lockout. The switch is protecting your floor and the boiler's flue path. If the boiler is locking out on a condensate or vent error, call ROMA Heating & Cooling.
What a licensed technician will check
A technician services the pump and the whole condensate path together. They clean the reservoir and the trap, test the float and overflow switch, check the check valve and the discharge line's slope and termination — an open or vented drain, with an air gap, so the boiler's trap cannot siphon — and confirm the line is protected from freezing. Where the pump has failed, it is replaced with a unit approved for condensing appliances and rated for the boiler's condensate output.
The technician also verifies the boiler's condensate trap is clean and filled, because a pump that runs constantly can be a symptom of a trap or heat exchanger problem upstream. Navien's annual maintenance guidance has the technician clean the condensate trap and check the neutralizer at the same visit, which is the natural time to service the pump.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a condensate pump for my boiler?
Only when gravity drainage will not work. Viessmann's instructions require a pump if the boiler's condensate outlet is lower than the drain, and Navien's manual recommends one for long runs or where the boiler sits below the tub or drain it must reach.
Why does my condensate pump run all the time?
A pump that never shuts off is usually trying to empty a reservoir it cannot clear, or responding to a stuck float. Check the discharge tube for kinks or freezing and have the pump and the boiler's trap serviced — a constantly running pump can also point at a trap or heat exchanger problem.
What happens if the condensate pump fails in winter?
Condensate backs up, the overflow switch can trip and shut the boiler down, and water can end up on the floor. HTP's manual warns that a frozen or obstructed condensate line can let condensate exit the appliance tee and cause water damage, so a failed pump in cold weather deserves prompt attention.
