DHW plate heat exchanger

The DHW plate heat exchanger is the stainless-steel block inside a combi boiler that transfers heat from the boiler's water to the domestic hot water you use at the tap. Scale and contamination are its main enemies, and when it clogs or leaks, hot water suffers. This page explains what the plate exchanger does, how it fails, and how a licensed technician cleans or replaces one.

What it does in a combi system

A combi boiler keeps its heating water and its drinking water separate, and the plate heat exchanger is where the two meet without mixing. Navien's NCB-H service manual describes the DHW heat exchanger as allowing heat transfer between the hot water coming from the primary and secondary heat exchangers and the cold water on the domestic side, with the result being hot water available for domestic use. The heating water passes on one side of thin stainless plates and the domestic water on the other, and heat crosses the metal.

Viessmann's service instructions for its combi models describe the design intent: the brazed plate heat exchangers operate with high turbulence flow even at low flow rates, and that turbulence keeps small particles in suspension, minimizing fouling and scaling. The same manual is honest about the limits — in some applications the fouling can be very high, such as extremely hard water used at high temperatures.

The plate exchanger works with the diverting valve and the DHW flow sensor as a system: the flow sensor starts the demand, the diverting valve sends boiler heat to the exchanger, and the exchanger transfers it to the domestic water. A fault in any of the three can produce the same complaint at the tap.

How it fails

Scaling is the most common failure, and hard water is the cause. Mineral deposits build on the domestic side of the plates, insulating them from the water and narrowing the passages. Heat transfer drops, so the hot water temperature becomes unstable or never reaches its target, and the boiler may run longer and hotter to compensate. Navien's service manual tells the technician to check whether impurities in the heating water have clogged the exchanger and reduced heat transfer to the domestic water.

A cracked or corroded plate exchanger fails in a more serious direction: the two water circuits can cross. Navien's diagnostic notes that a leak in the plate heat exchanger will cause pressure in the space heating side to increase to tap water pressure level — a telltale sign a technician looks for when a sealed heating system starts gaining pressure whenever hot water is used. The same manual associates the exchanger with error codes E016, E030 and E353.

Debris from the heating system can also foul the heating side of the exchanger, and a partially blocked exchanger can starve the boiler of flow, producing high-limit or temperature-difference errors that look like pump problems.

Safe things to check

Watch for the symptoms rather than opening anything. Unstable hot water temperature, hot water that is weaker in winter or after a season of heavy use, and a heating-system pressure gauge that climbs while hot water runs are all worth reporting. If your water is very hard, mention that too — it changes what the technician expects to find.

Do not attempt to descale a plate heat exchanger yourself, and do not add cleaning chemicals to the boiler's water or domestic lines. The domestic side of the exchanger carries drinking water, and the wrong chemical or a poor rinse can contaminate it. Cleaning is a service procedure with its own chemicals, flow rates and rinse steps.

What a licensed technician will check

A technician confirms the diagnosis before quoting a part. They check the DHW flow sensor and diverting valve first, because they are less expensive and can mimic exchanger symptoms, then look at the exchanger itself. On Viessmann's combi models, the service procedure has the technician check the DHW side for scaling and the heating side for contamination and clean or replace the exchanger as required.

Where cleaning is possible, the manuals prescribe a controlled procedure. Viessmann's instructions allow only chemical cleaning, using chemicals that do not attack copper and stainless steel, and recommend consulting a plate heat exchanger cleaning specialist; the procedure circulates a cleaning solution — food-grade white vinegar or citric acid — at no more than the normal flow rate for at least 60 minutes, then rinses with clean potable water for at least 7 minutes, and reassembles with new gaskets and a specified screw torque. Where the exchanger is cracked or too fouled to recover, it is replaced.
