Isolation / service valve
Isolation valves are the full-port shutoffs at the boiler's supply and return that let a technician service the boiler without draining the whole system. This page explains why they matter, how they fail, and what a technician checks.
What it does in a hydronic system
Every service task on a boiler — replacing a pump, cleaning a strainer, changing a sensor — starts with the same need: stop the water. Isolation valves make that possible. Installed on the supply and return connections, usually as full-port ball valves, they let the technician close off the boiler and work on it while the rest of the system stays full.
Manufacturers are specific about the details. Navien's NCB-H manual requires full port ball valves for the boiler system, warning that a restricted valve can limit flow through the boiler, recommends check valves to prevent reverse flow during pump off cycles, and recommends unions for unit serviceability. Weil-McLain's EG manual states that isolation valves are required to enable servicing of the boiler's temperature sensor and directs installers to follow the piping diagrams. Laars' Mini-Therm manual instructs installers to provide unions and isolation valves at the boiler inlet and outlet so it can be isolated for service, and NTI's FTG manual lists isolation valves, drain and purge valves among the components a proper system design must include.
There are rules about where isolation valves must not go. IBC's SL G3 manual is explicit that no isolation valve is permitted between the boiler and its relief valve — the relief valve must always see boiler pressure — and that the fill station uses an isolation valve that stays closed.
How it fails
Isolation valves fail from disuse. A ball valve that has not been operated in years can seize, and a technician who cannot close it cannot safely service the boiler without draining the system. Valves also weep at the stem packing, corrode at threaded or flanged connections, or lose their handles to age and heat.
Another failure is subtler: a valve that is left partly closed. Because a partially open ball valve throttles flow, a system can behave as though it has a circulation problem when the real issue is a valve position. Gate and globe valves that were never meant to be service isolation valves can also clog or fail to seal. A weeping isolation valve rarely floods a room, but it keeps the boiler area damp and can hide a slow system pressure loss.
Safe things to check
Look for drips, mineral trails and rust at the boiler connections. If you know where your isolation valves are, check that their handles are present and that they are fully open — not cracked partway. Note any water staining under the boiler, and mention it when you book service.
Do not turn isolation valves on a hot, pressurized system just to see if they move, and do not use them to balance flow. A valve that will not budge should be left for a technician, since forcing it can break the stem and turn a small job into a flooded one.
What a licensed technician will check
During service, a technician exercises the isolation valves and checks them for leaks while the boiler is running and after it is isolated. Where a valve is seized or weeping, it is replaced with a full-port valve of the correct size, along with the gaskets and unions, and the repair is leak-tested under pressure.
Technicians also confirm the valves are the right type and in the right places — full port on the boiler connections, none between the boiler and the relief valve, and check valves where the manual calls for them. Why are full-port valves required for boiler isolation?
Navien's manual requires full port ball valves because a restricted valve can limit flow through the boiler. Isolation valves are meant to be fully open or fully closed — they are not flow-control devices.
Can an isolation valve leak be repaired?
Sometimes a weeping stem can be repacked, but a valve that will not seal or will not turn is replaced. The work is contained: the technician isolates the boiler, swaps the valve and re-checks for leaks.
Can I close my boiler isolation valves to work on a radiator?
No. Closing the wrong valves can deadhead the pump or leave the boiler firing with no flow. Radiator work has its own isolation points; boiler valves are for the technician servicing the boiler.
