An outdoor reset sensor reads the outside temperature so a boiler's control can match the water temperature it sends out to the weather — milder days need cooler water. This page explains what the sensor does for a hydronic system, how it fails, and what a licensed technician checks.

What it does in a hydronic system

A house loses heat faster on a cold day than a mild one, so the perfect boiler supply temperature changes with the weather. The outdoor reset sensor is the component that lets a boiler know what the weather is doing: a small temperature probe mounted on an outside wall, wired back to the control, which then raises or lowers its target water temperature along a reset curve. Navien's NCB-H manual describes the purpose directly: the outdoor reset control feature may be used to enhance energy efficiency while maintaining optimal heating performance, automatically changing the space heating temperature setting according to the outdoor temperature and the system's load.

The benefit is gentler, steadier heat and better boiler behaviour. Instead of running hot water whenever the thermostat calls, the system runs warmer water on cold days and cooler water on mild ones, which lengthens heating cycles, reduces the cycling that wastes energy, and — on a condensing boiler — keeps return water cool enough for the boiler to actually condense. The sensor is a small component with a large effect on control strategy, which is why its placement is specified rather than casual. Navien's NCB-H manual directs the sensor to a north or northeast wall under the eaves, shielded from direct sunlight, away from vents, fans, lights and other heat sources, wired with 18-gauge thermostat cable without splices and routed away from line-voltage wiring to avoid interference.

Where it fits — and where it does not

Outdoor reset suits systems that can run at lower water temperatures: condensing boilers feeding radiators sized generously, baseboard, or in-floor loops, which is most of what is installed in Greater Vancouver today. Weil-McLain's Ultra manual reflects the range — its control includes an integral outdoor reset option with reset curves matched to the system type selected, from finned-tube baseboard to radiant floor.

Older systems are a different story, and the caution in Weil-McLain's CGi manual is worth quoting in spirit: on cast-iron systems, controls that lower the water temperature must be paired with piping that keeps the boiler's return water warm enough — the manual's low-temperature sections protect against return water below roughly 130 °F, warning that cold return water can corrode boiler sections or burners. In plain terms: outdoor reset is a control strategy, not a part you bolt onto any boiler. Whether a particular home's emitters and boiler can use it is a question a technician answers from the system, not a brochure.

How it fails

The sensor is a thermistor — a resistor whose value changes with temperature — so its failures are electrical and quiet. The wire can break or corrode at the terminals, the sensor can drift out of calibration, or the location can be compromised: a sensor in direct sun, beside a dryer vent, or under a light reads the wrong temperature and quietly asks the boiler for the wrong water temperature. The control usually flags a disconnected or shorted sensor with an error on the display, but a drifted reading can be hard to spot because nothing stops working — the house is just warmer or cooler than it should be for the weather.

Symptoms to notice: rooms that feel inconsistent with the thermostat setpoint as the weather changes, gas use that creeps up without a reason, or a boiler display that shows a sensor or outdoor-temperature error. None of these is an emergency, but each is worth reporting.

What a licensed technician will check

A technician verifies an outdoor reset installation the way the manuals describe. They check the sensor's location against the placement rules — north or northeast side, shaded, away from heat sources and interference, per Navien's NCB-H manual — and test the sensor's resistance against the manufacturer's specification: IBC's SL G3 documentation calls for a 10k-ohm thermistor at 25 °C and recommends against third-party sensors that do not match.

The wiring is checked for corrosion and secure termination, and the control's reset curve is reviewed against the system's emitters and the boiler's design temperatures. Where a sensor has failed it is a small, inexpensive replacement, and the technician confirms the control reads sensible outdoor temperatures afterwards.
