Thermistor / NTC sensor
A thermistor is the small temperature probe — technically a negative temperature coefficient, or NTC, resistor — that tells a boiler's control how hot the water and flue gases are. Boilers use several of them, and because the control trusts them completely, a probe that drifts or fails can make a healthy boiler behave badly. This page explains what thermistors do, how they fail, and how a licensed technician tests them.
What it does in a hydronic system
A thermistor is a resistor whose resistance falls as its temperature rises. That simple relationship lets a boiler's control calculate temperature precisely from an electrical measurement. Navien's NCB-H service manual describes the part's function directly: measure hot water, cold water, space heating outlet and inlet temperatures in the boiler. The same manual lists the error codes a failed probe can raise — E047 for the exhaust thermistor, E205 for the heating supply, E218 for the heating return, E407 for the domestic hot water outlet and E421 for the domestic cold inlet.
The probes themselves are small and inexpensive, and they are mounted where the temperatures actually matter: in wells or pockets on the water pipes and heat exchanger, and in the flue path for the exhaust sensor. IBC's SL G3 documentation specifies NTC 10k type 2 characteristics for its temperature sensors — 10,000 ohms at 25 °C — which is the detail that makes a replacement probe match the control's expectations.
Because several probes feed one control, the boiler can compare readings against each other. IBC's SL G3 troubleshooting notes that a temperature-probe error triggers when dual sensors deliver divergent values, which is how a control catches a probe that is reading but reading wrong.
How they fail
Thermistors fail in three broad ways. The sensing element can go open or short — the failure the error tables are built around — usually at the probe or its connector. It can drift out of calibration, so the control receives a plausible but incorrect temperature. Or the mounting can fail: a probe that has backed out of its well reads air temperature instead of water temperature and quietly misleads the control.
Navien's service manual summarizes the consequences: if any of the thermistors fail, an error code appears before starting operation, and if resistance values are off, the boiler will produce temperature fluctuations in hot water. The symptoms a homeowner notices follow from that — no heat, no hot water, erratic temperatures, or a boiler that locks out even though nothing seems wrong.
Wiring and connectors cause more probe faults than the probes themselves. Corrosion, a loose pin or a wire chafed during service can interrupt the circuit intermittently, so the boiler faults only when it is warm, or only after someone has been working nearby.
Safe things to check
Read the display and write down the exact code. Navien's error list distinguishes supply, return, DHW and exhaust probes, and NTI's TFT manual does the same with separate inlet and outlet sensor faults — the code tells the technician which circuit to test, which is most of the diagnosis.
Do not unplug, wiggle or remove a probe to test it yourself. The probes sit in the boiler's water and flue paths, and pulling one can release hot water or flue gases. If the fault is intermittent, note when it appears — during a shower, first thing in the morning, only when the boiler is hot — and pass that pattern on.
What a licensed technician will check
Technicians test thermistors the way the manuals teach: by measuring resistance and comparing it with the manufacturer's table. Navien's service manual instructs a resistance check with the unit stopped and cooled, and prints the expected values across the operating range. NTI's TFT manual sends the technician to its thermistor resistance chart for inlet and outlet sensor faults, with a note that the outlet sensor incorporates two sensors and each should be checked individually.
The connector and the mounting get the same attention as the probe. The technician checks the plug for corrosion and secure seating, confirms the probe is fully inserted in its well, and replaces the probe only after the circuit has been tested. A replacement is verified by watching the control report sensible temperatures as the boiler fires.
