What is happening

A condensing boiler recovers heat from its flue gases by cooling them below the dew point, and that process produces acidic water continuously while the boiler fires. The water collects in a trap inside the boiler and drains away through a small plastic line to a floor drain or outside. If the line cannot drain, water backs up inside the boiler, and the appliance responds with a shutdown before condensate can reach its burner and controls.

The result looks like a sudden boiler failure: the burner stops, sometimes mid-cycle, often with a fault shown on the display. Because condensate production stops the moment the boiler stops firing, the blockage can be intermittent, with the boiler running for a while, shutting down, and restarting later. That pattern is a useful clue when nothing else has changed.

Safe things to check at home

Look at where the condensate line discharges, from a safe position: outside through the wall or into a floor drain in the mechanical room. During a cold snap, check whether the exterior discharge point is frozen or buried in snow and ice; an ice plug at the outlet is one of the most common winter blockages in BC homes.

If the tubing runs where you can see it without moving equipment, check for kinks, sagging loops full of water, or a neutralizer that looks clogged. Common causes

On boilers that drain uphill, a small condensate pump moves the water, and a failed or dying pump shuts the boiler down exactly like a blockage. Neutralizers filled with media can also clog once the media breaks down.
