In-floor heating zones not warming evenly

In-floor heating zones that warm unevenly or not at all: how radiant loops work, the air, flow and balancing faults behind cold floors, and why the whole loop gets checked before the boiler.

What is happening

In-floor heating warms through long loops of tubing buried in concrete or suspended beneath the floor, and each loop is a closed circuit sharing the boiler's hot water through a manifold. The slab is the radiator: it absorbs heat from the water and releases it slowly upward, which is why radiant zones warm the floor first and the air second.

A zone that is not warming evenly can mean a loop with no flow at all, a loop circulating but delivering too little heat, or a room that is warm at one end and cold at the other. Radiant problems are also slow problems: a slab holds its heat for hours, so a fault can take a full day to show itself and a repair a full day to prove.

Safe things to check at home

Confirm the zone's thermostat is set above the room temperature and calling, and note whether the boiler fires and other zones warm while this one stays cold. If the manifold is accessible, look at each loop's flow indicator and valve positions without turning anything, and carefully feel the supply and return pipes to the zone: a warm supply with a cold return can mean no circulation through that loop.

Do not open manifold valves, bleed in-floor loops or adjust balancing controls yourself; in-floor circuits are purged and balanced with the whole system pressurised, and a valve turned by guesswork can take a technician hours to undo. Common causes

Air is the most common culprit after any work on the system: a loop that was opened for a repair or refilled without a proper purge traps air at its high points, and an air-bound loop moves almost no heat even while the boiler runs normally. Stuck actuators on manifold valves, failed pumps and isolation valves left closed stop whole zones the same way.

Slow, uneven warming points at balancing and design: loops of very different lengths sharing one manifold deliver different amounts of heat, a pump that has weakened delivers less flow to the farthest loops, and sludge in an older system narrows the tubing over time. A slab over uninsulated or damp ground, or rooms where rugs and furniture cover the floor, also change how a perfectly healthy loop feels underfoot.

When to call

Call when a whole zone stays cold through a full day of calling, when the supply pipe is hot but the loop will not warm, or when a zone that used to heat now takes noticeably longer than it did. Radiant faults rarely cure themselves, and a loop sitting without flow in cold weather is at risk in its own way.

If air is the problem the zone is purged loop by loop until only water flows, and if flow is the problem the pump, valves and actuators are tested and the loop balance is measured.

Why does my in-floor zone take hours to warm up?

Radiant slabs heat the mass of the floor before the air, so slow response is normal. A zone that used to be faster may have air, a closed manifold valve or a weakening pump.

Can I bleed an in-floor heating loop like a radiator?

No. In-floor loops are purged through their manifolds with the system pressurised, and opening the wrong connection can drain the loop or let in air. Leave purging to a technician.

Why is one room warm and the next cold on the same zone?

The rooms may sit on different loops of the same zone, or the same loop may be unbalanced. Flow measurement at the manifold shows which loop is short-changing which room.
