Boiler short cycling

Short cycling is a pattern rather than a single fault: the burner fires, reaches its target or its limit quickly, shuts down, and repeats the cycle minutes or even seconds later. A healthy modulating boiler stretches its burns out, especially in the mild shoulder seasons common in Greater Vancouver, so frequent on-off firing stands out against that normal behaviour.

Short cycling is worth recognising because every start carries ignition wear and a brief period of lower-efficiency operation. It can be a design mismatch, a setup problem or a fault in the heating loop, and the way to tell the difference is to watch the pattern and let a technician measure it rather than guessing from the sound of the burner.

Watch the boiler through a heating cycle and write down what you see: how long the burner stays on, how long it stays off, and whether the display shows an alert or simply normal on-off operation. Flow problems produce the same pattern from the other direction: if the pump is weak or air is trapped, water at the boiler reaches the target temperature quickly even though the rooms stay cold, and the burner shuts off on temperature while the loop never gets real heat. Zone valves that open only partway, thermostat locations that sense heat too early, and control settings such as a too-tight differential or an incorrect maximum can each shorten burns.

Call when the boiler is clearly firing far more often than it used to, when burns have become very short, or when you can hear it starting and stopping through the night. Occasional short burns on a mild day can be normal, but a steady rhythm of firing and stopping while rooms sit below setpoint is worth having measured.
