What actually separates them

The CI2-1000 is the top of the CI2 middle chassis; the CI2-1500 opens the large chassis. The 1500's printed range runs from a 50,000 BTU (14.7 kW) minimum — matching the entry models and well below the 1000's 100,000 BTU (29.3 kW) floor — up to 1,500,000 BTU (440 kW), the widest range printed in the series.

The physical step is substantial: weight nearly doubles from 963 lb (437 kg) to 1812 lb (822 kg), and water content rises from 50 to 113 USG — the highest water-content row of any CI2 model, above even the CI2-2000's 99 USG. The printed efficiency rows ease from 96.8% to 96.6% across the chassis step, and the CI2-1500 runs two burner control units.

Both models carry the Inox-Crossal heat exchanger, MatriX cylinder burner and Lambda PrO₂ trim on the Viessmann One Base platform. The 1500 is the choice when per-boiler capacity toward 1500 MBH is needed; its higher water volume also suits systems where mass helps steady burner run times, while the 1000 keeps the lighter middle chassis for loads that stay below its ceiling.
