Weil-McLain CGi (cast iron)

The CGi is Weil-McLain's cast iron induced-draft boiler, discontinued in Canada alongside the CGa by the June 30, 2023 production cut-off; the Canadian line-up (50-233 MBH) was the Series-3-era generation while the US moved on to CGi Series 5.

About the CGi (cast iron)

The CGi is the induced-draft companion to the CGa: a cast iron boiler the CA page lists at up to 85.1% AFUE with chimney or sidewall venting — Category I with B-vent or Category III with AL29-4C stainless steel pipe. Canada sold seven sizes from 50 to 233 MBH, with the CA page noting that Category I venting needs a jump from 3" to 4" up to the CGi-3 size and 3" to 5" on the rest.

Like the CGa, the CGi carries the CA phase-out note and is covered by the April 27, 2023 news release: production of mid-efficiency CGi and CGa hot water boilers ended on June 30, 2023 under the federal efficiency standard for non-condensing residential boilers under 300,000 BTUH, with 20+ years of parts support promised.

Generation separation matters here too. The Canadian CGi data reflects the older Series-3-era units, while the US CGi is now in Series 5 (manual 550-100-629/0126, January 2026, induced draft, 48-222 MBH inputs, 84.0% AFUE). The two countries therefore never shared a CGi generation after the 2023 cut-off, and owners should read codes and parts lists from the manual for their own unit's generation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CGi still sold in Canada?

No. Weil-McLain Canada phased out the CGi with a production cut-off of June 30, 2023 under federal efficiency standards, per its April 27, 2023 news release; remaining stock was available only while supplies lasted.

What venting does the CGi use?

The CA discontinued page lists chimney venting (Category I, B-vent) or sidewall venting (Category III, AL29-4C stainless), and notes Category I vent sizes increase from 3" to 4" up to the CGi-3 and 3" to 5" on larger sizes.

How does the Canadian CGi differ from the US model?

Canada's CGi was the Series-3-era generation (50-233 MBH, up to 85.1% AFUE) frozen at the 2023 cut-off, while the US sells CGi Series 5 (48-222 MBH, 84.0% AFUE, manual 550-100-629/0126). Read codes against the unit's own generation manual.
