What actually separates them

Both models are the same wall-hung condensing combi: 95 lb at 18.5 x 27 x 12.8 in, rated 95.0% AFUE, with 316L stainless steel primary and secondary heat exchangers, 1" heating water connections, 3/4" DHW and gas connections, and the same 2"-or-3" sealed combustion direct vent options (ULC S636-certified plastic venting in Canada). Noritz markets both for simultaneous DHW and space heating.

Minimum fire is identical at 18,000 BTU/h on both the heating and DHW sides, so in a low-load home the two boilers modulate the same way. The published differences sit at the top of the ranges: heating input reaches 100 MBH on the 180DV against 120 MBH on the 199DV, and the standard (DHW) input reaches 180,000 BTU/h against 199,900 BTU/h.

Because the cabinet and minimum fire do not change, the 199DV costs nothing in low-fire behaviour or installation footprint; the decision follows the room-by-room heat-loss calculation and the household's hot-water demand. A load that approaches 100 MBH of heating or heavy simultaneous hot-water draws is where the 199DV's extra ceiling earns its place.
