Viessmann's Serial Number Lookup Tool page states the format plainly: most Viessmann serial numbers are 16 digits long and contain only numbers. The tool accepts one serial number per line and returns the model number associated with it, so a technician holding a rating plate but no model record can identify the boiler from the number alone.
The same page adds an important limit: the tool should not be used to validate serial numbers, because it checks only the first seven digits to find the model information. That means a typo in the later digits can still return a model, and the tool is an identification aid rather than a verification service. Enter the number carefully from the plate and treat the result as the starting point for confirmation.
Where the number is, by model family
Viessmann maintains a Serial Number Locator with a page for each product family — residential boilers such as the Vitodens 100 and Vitodens 200, commercial boilers such as the Vitocrossal and Vitogas lines, domestic hot water tanks, solar systems and system technology. Each page shows where the serial number is located on that specific appliance rather than offering one generic diagram.
The practical value is obvious on a service call: the locator answers the where question for the exact model in front of the technician, which is faster and less error-prone than searching a full installation manual on site. The locator and the lookup tool are the two official serial-number resources Viessmann publishes for its installed base.
Two serials on one plate: the 16-digit code and the ASME/NB number
Viessmann's installation and service instructions for North American boilers describe two identifiers that appear together. The Vitodens 100 instructions refer to the 16-digit serial number bar code on the rating plate and the 12-digit ASME serial number; the Vitodens 200 service instructions refer to the 16-digit boiler serial number on the bar code label and the 12-digit ASME/NB serial number.
The ASME/NB number is the pressure-vessel registration number, and it is the one to quote when the question concerns the vessel itself. The 16-digit serial is the commercial identifier that the lookup tool and the parts system use. Recording both numbers on the first visit prevents confusion later, when one or the other is requested.
How the serial is used: model identification, parts and warranty
The lookup tool's output — a model number from a serial number — is the first step in three common jobs. Parts ordering needs the model before any component can be matched, and Viessmann's parts resources are organised by model. Warranty enquiries are answered against the model and the installation record. And service documentation, including service instructions and technical bulletins, is selected by model and generation.
For boilers in the field, the serial is also the key that connects an appliance to any published safety or service communication that applies to its production period. Reading and recording it is part of the first visit, not an afterthought.
What to do when the lookup result looks wrong
Because the tool checks only the first seven digits, the model it returns should always be checked against the plate itself — the model name and rating data are printed on the same label as the serial. If the two disagree, re-enter the number digit by digit from the plate, and if the disagreement persists, contact Viessmann technical support with photographs of the plate rather than ordering parts on the lookup result alone.
The same discipline applies to the locator: if the plate cannot be found where the locator shows it for that model, confirm the model first. A serial number that does not exist on the appliance cannot identify it, and a plate hidden behind a panel is still a plate a technician can find.
