IBC SFT-1 F006 — Flame detected when burner is off

F006

SafetyIBC Superflow SFT-1 tankless water heater with the numeric-display control

The controller detected a flame signal at a moment when the burner should be off. A stray flame signal can indicate a gas valve passing gas when closed, an electrical fault, or a sensor/grounding problem, so the unit shuts down.

Applies to

This fault is shown by the numeric-display touch panel control on Superflow SFT-1 tankless water heaters (SFT 199-1), as documented in IBC Installation & Operating Instructions — SFT 199-1 tankless water heater, doc 84160406, sections 5.3.1–5.3.3.

Controller: numeric-display touch panel control. Source manual: 84160406 (2024-09).

Why a code is not a diagnosis

The code does not say whether the signal is a real flame (gas valve leaking through) or an electrical artifact from grounding or a faulty module. Both paths are on the manual's check list and both need a technician.

Safe things to observe

  • Treat this code seriously: if gas is passing when it should not, there is a hazard.
  • If you smell gas, leave the building immediately and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or 911 from outside.
  • Turn the appliance off at its service switch if you can do so safely.

Do not

  • Do not reset or run the appliance after this code without a technician's diagnosis.
  • Do not touch the gas valve.

How professional service helps

  1. A technician verifies grounding and internal/external power supply quality.
  2. The gas valve is tested to confirm it closes at the end of a demand; the ignition module or control module is replaced if the fault points there.

Frequently asked questions

Is flame-when-off dangerous?

It can be, because one possible cause is a gas valve passing gas while the burner is off. Until a technician confirms otherwise, treat the appliance as needing service before it runs again.
