IBC SL G3 “Low water pressure” alert

The manual lists this alert when the boiler's inlet water pressure reads below 4 psi. A sealed hydronic system needs enough pressure to keep water in the boiler and push it around the building, and the control flags a reading it considers too low to fire safely.

Why a code is not a diagnosis

Low pressure can come from a leak, a failed expansion tank pushing water out through the relief valve, a faulty fill valve, or a pressure-sensor fault. The alert does not identify the cause, and repeated low-pressure alerts usually mean a leak or expansion problem rather than normal evaporation.

Safe things to observe

  • Read the pressure gauge and note the cold-system pressure (your installer sets a normal cold pressure, often around 12-15 psig).
  • Look for visible drips or wet spots near the boiler, pumps, pipe joints and the relief-valve discharge pipe.
  • If you find a fast leak or standing water, turn the boiler off at its service switch and call a licensed technician.

Do not

  • Do not keep re-pressurizing a system that keeps losing pressure without finding the cause.
  • Do not cap or block the relief-valve discharge pipe.
  • Do not add water while the boiler is very hot unless you are certain of the correct procedure.

Why does my boiler pressure drop every winter?

Falling pressure usually means a slow leak or a failed expansion tank, not seasonal evaporation — a sealed system does not consume water. A technician should find the cause rather than you topping it up all season.

Can I add water myself?
